Cillian Murphy stars as theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer in this biographical drama written and directed by Christopher Nolan, which is set in two distinct time periods.
In 1942, with the US government anxious to build an atomic bomb, Oppenheimer is appointed as the scientific director of the Manhattan Project, leading a team of scientists at Los Alamos in New Mexico who will develop and test the bombs that will ultimately be detonated over Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Meanwhile, in 1954, having come into conflict with politicians due to his opposition to the development of the hydrogen bomb and his belief in strict controls on nuclear power, Oppenheimer is subjected to a closed security hearing where his previous communist associations are used to discredit him.
